With over 560 color photos and well-researched text, this book recounts the histories of the hard working, entrepreneurial people of Cape Cod, Folk Art of Cape Cod and the Islands, by Jeanne Marie Carley Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket and their role in this nation, as told through the folk art primitives the residents produced from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. The art displayed includes the works of itinerant painters, domestic weavers and quilters, seminary school watercolorists, and carvers in wood, metal, and stone. Among these fascinating items are: paintings including portraits and silhouettes, landscapes and genre paintings; maritime art such as sculpture and scrimshaw; trade figures and signs; carousel art; wood carvings; weathervanes and whirligigs; religious and decorative art; textiles, including quilts and samplers; and gravestones. All of these beautiful and compelling works of art speak eloquently of the human aspirations sparked by the freedom and prosperity offered by the coasts and the bold, clear visual language that ordered these craftsmen’s world. Orphan train child Benjamin 'Bennie' Joseph Lang AKA Bernard Kampa 1897-1980
The poignant and redemptive life story of "Orphan Train" child "Bennie" Lang AKA Bernard Kampa (1897-1980) has finally been revealed, and for that we give our profound thanks to his relative, granddaughter-in-law Bev Lang. At the age of five Bennie was indentured to the Valentin M. and Mary (Szrepurek) Kampa family. Of special interest is a copy of Bennie's Oct. 14, 1912 Indenture Agreement between The New York Foundling Hospital of the Sisters of Charity of the City of New York and Valentine Kampa, for which Bev has graciously provided a condensed version.
We have another "Orphan Train" child taken into a related Kampa family from the same foundling hospital and at the very same time as Bennie: Christine Catherine Murphy Kampa Boggie (1911-2005). She was indentured from the age of two to the Jacob and Mary (Waldera) Kampa family to help out on the home farm along with their four sons. Newly posted are an undated letter circa early 1990s from Christine Boggie to Gene Kampa, along with a copy of an article from the San Jose Mercury News that mentions Christine, entitled: "Orphan Trains": how children were railroaded into slavery.

Phil Kampa

Phil Kampa, 23, is shown beside the rig he now drives for Schneider Transportation Company. He elected not to attend college choosing instead to work in a care home for special needs adults where he became a supervisor. While working there he attended classes to become certified to drive a commercial truck and now he is traveling the highways, hauling freight. We all send best wishes to Phil in his new vocation!

Ruth Bernice Stimmler (née Tidslevold) 1913-2012 Just two days before her 99th birthday, Ruth Bernice Stimmler passed away at the Care Center in Grand Marais where she has resided for 9½ years.
Ruth was born October 18, 1913, to Hannah and Solomon Tidslevold, immigrants from Norway, and lived on a small farm in Clark, SD, until she was 10 years old. Ruth, her sister Inez and brother Nels moved with their parents to Minneapolis, MN, where she spent much of her life. She married Anthony Stimmler in 1935 and had five children. Ruth was a full-time, devoted mother, but became a young widow at the age of 38. Her children then ranged in age from 2 to 15 years.
Parenting was her major goal in life; living with many hardships she remained a full-time parent until all the children were in school. She then worked around their schedule, finding work in the local school lunch program and later full-time work in the kitchens of the University of Minnesota.
Ruth loved to travel and had the Viking spirit, so she traveled later in life with her grown children. She visited her Norwegian relatives twice and lived for a time in Florida and in beautiful Hawaii. Ruth enjoyed the simple things in life, was good-natured and always centered her life on the family.
She moved to Grand Marais for eight years during the 1980s, helping with grandchildren Nadine, Lynn and Brian. Ruth also enjoyed babysitting other children and eventually helping daughter Bonnie in her Pierre’s Pizza restaurant.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Anthony in 1951, brother Nels in 1933, sister Inez in 2012 and daughter Janet in 1988.
She is survived by four children, Bonnie Swanson (Dick) of Grand Marais, Karen Bjorkman of Kona, HI, Richard Stimmler (Priscilla), of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Gerald Stimmler (Paula) of St. Paul, MN and 10 grandchildren, Michelle Kauth, Diane Young (Ed), Michael Kauth (Anna), Danny Kauth, Nadine Maki, Brian Swanson (Andrea), Lynn Swanson (Tim), Anthony Stimmler (Katy), Elizabeth Stimmler and Paul Stimmler. Ruth also had nine great-grandchildren, Nick, Jackie, Kieran, Lars, Evan, Erik, Mara, Chloe and Sadie and one great-great-granddaughter, Olivia.
The family is thankful for her peaceful passing, and for all the love and care she has received at the Care Center. She will be sorely missed by all.
A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m.

Thanks to Anne Firor's invaluable help there are now biographies for Lewis Joseph "Joseph" Dingmann (1921-1961) and his wife Bernice Cecilia Dingmann Watkins (née Gebhardt) (1914-1995). There also are new biographies posted for N. K. Hunt (1889-1967), brothers Frank F. Kampa (1890-1980) and Benedict Paul Kampa (1896-1960), Bernard Francis Kampa (1920-2009), Harold Roy "Kirk" Kirkpatrick (1914-1996), Jill Seibel (née Fastiggi) and her daughter, Samara Seibel.
