| Notes: | Hedwig was 26 years old when she departed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York City on the ship |
| "Donau" on May 12, 1883, travelling with
her newlywed farmer brother, Franz (age 25), his bride Agnes (age 22), and their siblings
Anna (age 16) and Paul (age 14). The Donau was a single screw, iron-hulled
ship of the North German Lloyd Line measuring 347' long by 40' wide with two masts and one funnel, and capable of 14 knots.
Hedwig was married by Priest Alois Roster to Robert James Roche at Rices Station, Benton, Minnesota on Jan. 14, 1889, and witnessed by her brother Paul Kampa. She was 32 and he was 46 years old. At the time of the June 9, 1900 U.S. federal census, Hattie was 44 years old and living with her husband Robert (age 65) and their six children ranging in age from 11 months to 10 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. Her husband and she had been married 12 years. He was working as a farmer and their eldest son, Robert, was working as an unpaid farm laborer. Son Robert could read, write and speak English, and attended school for 6 months out of the year. The other five children could not read or write, nor were they going to school yet. At the time of the June 14, 1905 Minnesota state census, Hattie was 48 years old and living with her husband, Robert (age 68), and their children on R.F.D. 2 in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. She had been living in the same enumeration district for 17 years and her husband for 25 years. He was working as a farmer. At the time of the May 2, 1910 U.S. federal census, Hattie was 54 years old and living with her husband, Robert J. (age 69), and their six children ranging in age from 10 to 19 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. She and her husband had been married 21 years, and she was the mother of six children, all of whom were still living. Both her husband and their eldest son, Robert, were working as farm laborers. Her husband told the enumerator that he emmigrated to the United States in 1867. At the time of the Apr. 10, 1930 U.S. federal census, Hattie told the enumerator she was 80 years old (although she actually was 73), widowed, and living with her single daughters Sophia (age 30) and Rose (age 27) on their own farm in Buckman Township, Morrision, Minnesota. The family owned a radio. All three were farmers in general farming, actively at work as of the last regular working day. Hattie died Feb. 26, 1932 in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota of cholecypstitis and chronic myocarditis. She was 75 years old. |
