| Notes: | In the April 22, 1930 federal census, Deed was 8 years old and living with her parents and six siblings in Foley, |
| Minnesota. Her
parents owned their home which was valued at $3,000 ($30,000 in
2001 currency) and the family had a radio.
DeeDee worked in Washington, DC and Omaha, NE prior to marrying Merv. He was in the Army and was sent to the Phillipines, so she went to live with her mother in Foley, MN where the first of her six children was born. After Merv returned from the war the Barteks settled in Omaha. While her mother was alive, Merv and Deed along with their children returned to Foley every summer and often spent time at Lake Julia. The Bartek household was one filled with games, dancing, prayers, and plenty of laughter. Deed did not work outside the home while raising her family, but was always there for her own children and most of their friends. In Shreveport the neighborhood kids called her "Mrs. B" when they came over to play. She loved bridge and bowling, and she and Merv had a nice circle of friends. After Merv died in Minnesota, Deed moved to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas where Joe and Red Stimler and Ann and Don Hall were living. She spent her last years there while traveling back and forth to California and Maryland to visit her children. She developed cancer in one of her kidneys, which was removed, and four years later she passed away after surgery for brain cancer. |
