His father Harold was working as an auto driver for a creamery company. George was attending school and able to read and write. At the time of the Apr. 2, 1930 U.S. federal census, George was 21 years old and living with his parents in their own home valued at $1,500 and located at 205 8th Ave. in North Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. The family owned a radio. His father and mother had been married at the ages of 23 and 25 years old, respectively. Father Harold was working as a butter cutter at a creamery and George was working as a laborer on the railroad. At the time of the Apr. 5, 1940 U.S. census, George was 31 years old (although his wife told the census enumerator that he was 39) and living with her 40-year-old wife Rose (who she said was 36) and his wife's 13-year-old nephew, Edward Huppler, in a rented home at 235 Summit Ave. in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. They had been living in the same place as of Apr. 1, 1935, and Edward had been living in Watertown, South Dakota. Rose told the enumerator that she was a college graduate, her husband had completed his first year of high school, and nephew Edward had finished the 8th grade. George was working 42 hours a week, 52 weeks a year as a brewer in a brewery, making $1,872 in 1939 and did not have income from any other sources. In the 1944 St. Paul City Directory, George and Rose are listed as living at 235 Summit Avenue. George was working as a brewer. Another address they lived at in St. Paul was 2730 Hazelwood Street. George and Rose lived in St. Paul and she died there on Mar. 12, 1989 at the age of 89. He followed her into death a year and a half later on Oct. 14, 1990. He was 82 years old. George is buried in Block: 25 Lot: 182 Space: 2 of Union Cemetery in Maplewood, Ramsey, Minnesota; Rose is buried beside him in Space: 1. Mark Winzenburg reminesces on his Great Uncle George: "George worked for Hamms Beer but that predates my memories of him. Later he worked as a security guard for 3M for many years and retired from that job. They lived on the East side of St. Paul, off White Bear Ave, on either E. Louise or E. Leone St. (I will try to track that down.) George loved to hunt and fish and developed a great passion for ham radio. He had a booming voice. He always had a big smile for us kids and loved to laugh and tell us stories. We thought he was great!" |
