were of the Roman Cathoic religion. He stated his birthplace was in Upper Canada.
At the time of the 1871 Census of Canada, Robert was 29 years old (or 30, as was stated in the census), single and living with his parents and six siblings ranging in age from 26 to 13 years old on a farm in Otonabee, Peterborough East, Ontario. Although his father and two younger brothers were working as farmers, he was working as a laborer. It was noted in the census that he was over 20 and unable to read or write. He and his family were of the Roman Catholic faith. At the time of the May 1, 1875 Minnesota state census, Robert was 33 years old (but told the enumerator that he was 30) and living with his younger brother John (age 27) in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. At the time of the June 2, 1880 U.S. federal census, Robert was 38 years old (although he told the census enumerator that he was 33) and living with his brother Morris (age 31) and sister Ellen (age 26) on a farm in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. Both he and his brother were farmers, and their sister was keeping house; all were single. Robert was married by Priest Alois Roster to Hedwig "Hattie" Frances Kampa at Rices Station, Benton, Minnesota on Jan. 14, 1889, and witnessed by her brother Paul Kampa. He was 46 and she was 32 years old. At the time of the June 19, 1895 Minnesota state census, Robert was 53 years old (but told the enumerator that he was 49) and living with his wife Hedwig (age 37) and their four children ranging in age from 5 years to 2 months in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. Robert was working as a farmer. At the time of the June 9, 1900 U.S. federal census, Robert was 58 years old (although he stated his age to be 65) and living with his wife Hattie (age 44) and their six children ranging in age from 11 months to 10 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. He and his wife had been married 12 years. He was working as a farmer and their eldest son, Robert, was working as an unpaid farm laborer. Son Robert could read, write and speak English, and attended school for 6 months out of the year. The other five children could not read or write, nor were they going to school yet. At the time of the June 14, 1905 Minnesota state census, Robert was 63 years old (although he said he was 68) and living with his wife Hattie (age 48) and their children on R.F.D. 2 in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. He had been living in the same enumeration district for 25 years and his wife for 17 years. He was working as a farmer. At the time of the May 2, 1910 U.S. federal census, Robert J. was 68 years old (however he told the enumerator he was 69) and living with his wife, Hattie (age 54), and their six children ranging in age from 10 to 19 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. He and his wife had been married 21 years, and she was the mother of six children, all of whom were still living. Both Robert and his eldest son, Robert, were working as farm laborers. He told the enumerator that he had emmigrated to the United States in 1867. Robert died Nov. 10, 1924 in Morrison County, Minnesota at the age of 82. |
