She was working as a silk finisher in a silk mill. Her elder sister Bertha who also lived with the family worked at a silk plant as well. The family did not own a radio. At the time of the April 1, 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Ruth was 28 years old and living with her husband Gerald and their two young sons, Gerald (age 4) and Adrian (6 months old), at 6738 Ridge Avenue in Philadephia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She stated she had graduated from high school. Her husband was working 40 hours a week as a city fireman for public safety. He worked 50 weeks in 1939 and earned $200. |
