| Notes: | At the time of the June 9, 1900 U.S. federal census, Anna was 7 years and living with her parents and five older |
| siblings ranging in age from 11 months to
10 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. Her parents had been married 12 years. Her father
was working as a farmer and her elder brother, Robert was
working as an unpaid farm laborer. Her brother could read, write and speak English, and attended school for 6 months out of the year.
All Rose's other siblings could not read or write, nor were they going to school yet.
At the time of the June 14, 1905 Minnesota state census, Anna was 12 years old and living with her parents and siblings on R.F.D. 2 in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. Her father had been living in the same enumeration district for 25 years and her mother for 17 years. Her father was working as a farmer. At the time of the May 2, 1910 U.S. federal census, Anna was 16 years old and living with her parents and five siblings ranging in age from 11 to 19 years old in Buckman Township, Morrison, Minnesota. Her parents had been married 21 years, and her mother was the mother of six children, all of whom were still living. Both elder brother Robert and his father were working as farm laborers. Her father told the enumerator that he had emmigrated to the United States in 1867. At the time of the Feb. 3, 1920 U.S. federal census, Anna E. was 26 years old (although she told the enumerator that she was 23), single and living alone in White Butte, Perkins, South Dakota. She was working as a teacher in a rural school. Anna married Wallace Judson Huppler in Grant County, South Dakota on May 23, 1922 when they both were 28 years old. She was living in Grant County at the time and he was living in Codington County, South Dakota. At the time of the Apr. 5, 1940 U.S. census, Anna was 46 years old and living with her 46-year-old husband W. J. Huppler and their five children ranging in age from 4 to 13 years old in a home rented for $10/month at 520 2nd St. SE in Watertown, Codington, South Dakota. They had been living in the same place as of Apr. 1, 1935. Anna told the enumerator that she had completed three years of high school, her husband had completed his first year of high school, as had their daughter Mary Lou. Son Edward G. had finished 8th grade, daughter Margaret had finished school through the 6th grade, and daughter Eileen had graduated from the 3rd grade. Youngest daughter Kay was only 4 years old and not yet in school. Her husband W. J. was working 52 weeks a year in maintenance on the highway, making $1,100 in 1939, and did not have income from any other sources. Wallace died in Watertown, Codington, South Dakota in February 1975 at the age of 81. After his death Anna moved to St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota and died there on Aug. 7, 1991. She was 98 years old. Mark Winzenberg reminisces on his grandmother: "Anna was my maternal grandmother and I have very fond memories of her. She survived diphtheria as a child but her hearing was badly damaged, so we always had to speak up. She was a wonderful baker. She always baked crescent rolls (aka horns) when we came to visit, so the house was filled with the fresh scent of buttery bread when we arrived. Some years after my grandfather died she became too frail to live alone. Her children decided she should move to a retirement home in Jackson, MN, where her daughter Mary Lou lived. After my father became ill and my parents moved to Arizona Anna moved to a retirement home in St. Paul near her son, Edward." |
