Harry W. Greenwood, 98, died December 30, 2004 at a Bismarck care center. Private family services were held.
Harry Wilfred Greenwood was born February 8, 1906, at Roscoe, Minn., the son of Ernest Alfred and Clara Julia (Kampa) Greenwood. In Harry's early childhood, they moved to Jamestown, where Harry graduated from Jamestown High School in 1924. Harry married Margaret Mary Barrett August 3, 1935, at Bismarck. Harry was employed by Burlington Northern Rail Road as a warehouse foreman for over 40 years. He was a member of the North Dakota National Guard and enjoyed swimming at the YMCA into his 90's. He also enjoyed hunting and gardening.
Harry is survived by his daughters, Mary Claire Greenwood, Edina, Minnesota, and Jane (Marvin) Loper, Maple Grove, Minn.; his granddaughters, Lynette (William) Panzott, Austintown, Ohio, and Connie Greenwood, Eugene, Oregon; his great-granddaughters, Gianna Panzott, Austintown, and Kylie Greenwood, Eugene; and nieces and nephews, Raymond Greenwood and Angela Seitz, Jamestown, Martha Spaans, East Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kenneth Joos, Gayle Brennicke and Gretchen Weber, all of Ames, Iowa, and Karen Smith, Jupiter, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his son, James R. Greenwood; a brother, Ray Greenwood; and a sister, Inez Joos.

Eugene David Kampa, 1922-2004 Our dear cousin and friend, Gene Kampa, passed away at his home in San Jose, California on Sunday, December 19, 2004 at the age of 82. He was born to Joseph L. and Lena Kampa (née Haaf) on April 7, 1922 in Claremont, Minnesota. During WWII Gene was in the 177th Engineers, D. Co. in the Army stationed in Anchorage and Amchitka, Alaska. He married his sweetheart June Sheffield Fawell on December 6, 1944 in Minneapolis. They had five children before their divorce. In December 1950 he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree and teaching credential in Industrial Arts. Gene taught woodworking for 35 years and was a member of the California Teachers Association. He married Mary Ann Deshler in February 1972. She died in 1985.
Gene is survived by his daughters and sons, Fran (Jack) Johnson, Sonora, Peggy (Joseph) Fortino, of Gilroy, Carol (Reha) Butros, of Mersin, Turkey, Bob (Lori) Kampa, of Aptos and Peter (Laura) Kampa, of McCloud, California, two sisters, Louise Kirkpatrick, of Aptos and Dorothy Fastiggi, of San Francisco, California, in addition to eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edmund, Ernest and Donald Kampa and sisters, Frances Windhurst, Martha Hanson and Alvina Morse.
Gene was a generous contributor to the family site and a personal friend. We all held him in the greatest affection and respect. Our hearts go out to his family. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday, January 16, 1 pm at the Villages Auditorium, 5000 Cribari Lane in San Jose.

Edna Mae Jenson, age 77, of Foley, was born October 7, 1927 in St. Cloud to Benedict and Helen (Piotrowski) Kampa. She married Gordon Jenson June 5, 1948 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Duelm. She graduated from Foley High School. The couple had lived in Minneapolis before moving to the Foley area where they lived and worked. She had worked at Hogan Drug Store in Foley; tended bar at the Olympic Lanes, Foley and hauled milk for Gordie's Milk Hauling. Edna Mae had also raised Siberian Huskies for many years. She was a member of the St. Lawrence Christian Mother's and St. Lawrence Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughters and son; Nancy Payne, Shafer; Janet Schustak, Foley and Mike Lund, Rosemont; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; brothers and sister; Richard Kampa, Foley; Roger Kampa, St. Cloud and Lois Marsh, Monticello. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, August 27, 2001.

Leonard Thomas Bordua, age 83, of 958 Vermont St., San Jose, California died of a heart attack at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro, California on June 17, 2004. He was born September 15, 1920 in Rockville, Connecticut to Alexis and Lillian Bordua. Lenny was a high school graduate and also served in the military. He worked as a taxi cab driver for 15 years. His wife preceded him in death. He is survived by four children.

Myrtle K. Pfeilsticker, age 85, of 639 Niagara St., Eau Claire, Wisconsin, formerly of Wabasha, Minnesota, died Tuesday evening, April 27, 2004, at the home of her daughter Judith in Eau Claire where she had resided for the past 15 years. She was born May 17, 1918 in Foley, Minnesota, the daughter of Otto and Cora (Scherberg) Balder. She married Wallace W. Pfeilsticker June 7, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Wally served in the U.S. Army during WWII during which time she lived and worked as a telephone operator in Hillman, Minn. The couple lived in Wabasha after he returned from the war. She worked as a nursing assistant for the Wabasha Nursing Home for many years. Her husband died December 12, 1976. After retiring, she sold her home and moved to Eau Claire to live with her daughter.

Braun siblings, Christmas Day 2004 Cousin Bob Mullally has shared remembrances of and identified his Uncle Archie McDonald, Uncle Paul Stimmler, Uncle George Benninghoff and Aunt Annie Benninghoff (née Stimmler) in photos from Delores Bartek (née Stimler)'s family album. He also had some additional comments on the barn built by Anton Stimmler and the old home of Anthony and Crescentia Stimmler. Cousin Sally Berthiaume (née Braun)'s friend Ray Landry contributed a wonderful photograph of the Braun siblings taken on Christmas Day 2004. Cousin Gayle Hubsell (née Stimler) has shared a moving remembrance of her Uncle Junior as well. Thank you, Bob, Gayle and Ray, for your valued input.

This nine-page article even includes some tasty recipes inspired by Dick and Bonnie's South American travels. Congratulations, Bonnie and Dick -- we are so very impressed!

A family get-together at the Kaufmann farm, about 1900


Karyn Westre contributed some fantastic old photographs of the John and Mary Ann (Imholte) Kaufmann family farm in Clear Lake, Minnesota with a close-up of family in the picture of Kaufmann farm. Included were pictures of Alma Kaufmann, the obituary of Henrietta (Kaufmann) McCollins, information on John Owen Kaufmann, Virginia Mary Kaufmann including her obituary, Mary Ellen Owens and Edward A. Kaufmann with his obituary. She also contributed information on Anton Imholte's Civil War service and Declaration for Invalid Pension, dated October 2, 1891. In addition, she has posted some Kaufmann family photographs with which she would like the family's help in identifying. If anyone recognizes any of the people show on these three pages, please let Karyn or Rae know. The Civil War Pension Index Card for John Kaufmann was added as well as additional information for his son, John Anthony Kaufmann.
Karyn's friend and fellow family researcher, Tennie Thelen, shared some beautiful pictures of John's daughter Isabella Kaufmann and Nick Thilgen and the wedding photograph of Martin and Ida (Kaufmann) Rengel in 1905, with a special bonus being their 50th wedding anniversary photograph.
Cousin Bob Mullally found a reference to patriarch John Kaufmann in the History of the Upper Mississippi Valley, Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota. We are indebted to Karyn, Tennie and Bob for their wonderful Kaufmann family photographs and research!
 

Connie Balder Mickolajak sent the obituary of Norbert Balder and a remembrance of her mother, Hazel A. Balder (née Wendt), who passed away in August of this year. It is through Connie's connection with family researcher Bob Saunders of Salem, Oregon that information was discovered regarding the residences, first wife and child of Irvin Laughery and the residences of his second wife, Adelaine Laughery (née Balder). Thank you, Connie, for your moving tribute to your mother and your good research.

Gene Kampa has donated so many wonderful old family pictures for inclusion on the site. A photo gallery has been made of a series of them from Stan and Martha Munson Hanson (née Kampa)'s wedding at Jack and Dorothy Munson's home in Saratoga, California in 1973. In addition, there are new photographs of Martha's daughter Janet, Frances Windhurst (née Kampa) in her 8th grade class, Fran Johnson (née Kampa) as a baby and a young girl, and with her sister Peggy. Gene also provided a close-up view of the picture of his father's blacksmith shop in Clear Lake, Minnesota circa 1901 to 1902. Thank you so much, Gene, for sharing these great photographs with all of us!

Denise Collings McGlone has shared photographs of the gravestones of Andrew and Anna J. Selinsky (née Popilek), and the death certificate of Anna's paternal uncle Johann "John" Popilek. Thank you very much, Denise!
 
Current photograph of Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Strasburg Cousin Scott Stimler sent a wonderful current photograph of the famous Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Strasburg, in addition to pictures of himself and his sisters Lynda Hill (née Stimler) and Cheryl Cotton (née Stimler), and photos of his brother Jeff and his bride Noreen from their May 2004 wedding. He also shared a super picture of our aunts Audrey Stimler (née Pouliet), Helen Lundblad (née Stimler), Barbara Milton Risdall (née Milton) and Marie Braun (née Stimler). We greatly appreciate Scott sharing these photographs with the family!
 

We are making progress in translating the German letters of Clemens Hünck through the kindness of both Lucia Nezelek and Dick Kampa's friend, Dori. Lucia has translated the letters of November 26, 1875 and May 10, 1876, and Dori worked on the letters of March 7, 1871, May 4, 1874, April 6, 1875, December 2, 1880, October 8, 1886, January 19, 1893, September 8, 1896 and March 1900. The letters were originally provided through the efforts of Martin Holz and transliterated from the original script by Wolfgang Tembrink. We appreciate very much all your efforts in understanding the lives and times of our ancestors through the first-hand accounts of Mr. Hünck, and extend a special thanks to Lucia and Dori for their recent translation work in this regard.
 

Dana Stimler contributed information on Descendants of Knud including Wilton Anderson's obituary, his brother Walter Anderson's birth certificate, Marriage License and Certificate of Walter H. Anderson to Alice R. Stickney and the Death Certificate of Walter Anderson. She included her research on their 1st cousin Lawrence Berhart Anderson, along with his Boston Globe obituary while sister Rae found his MIT obituary and information for a biography of Wilton Anderson's wife, Dagmar "Dagny" O. (Peterson) Anderson. On the Irish side, Dana supplied information for biographies of ancestors David Noonan and Margaret McGrath. She also found the Francis Bordua family in the 1910 census.
LoisMarie Okonek has shared some good photographs of the graves of James S. Anderson and his wife Maud G. Anderson in Minnesota, and in Wisconsin, that of their son Wilton J. Anderson. Thank you so much, LoisMarie and Dana both!

Marlene Armentrout contributed two obituaries for Norma F. Marohn (née Balder), new research for Norma's aunt Adelaide Mary Laughery (née Balder), Adelaide's husband Irvin Thomas Laughery and their son, Earlmond "Earl" Charles Laughery, including two of his obituaries as well. Thank you so much, Marlene, for sharing this documentation with the family group!
 

Hazel A. Balder (née Wendt), 92, mother of Connie Balder Mickolajak and Edward W. "Bill" Balder, died Sunday, August 8, 2004, in St. Francis, Wisconsin in the Park Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born the eldest of four children, she married Edward W. Balder on October 26, 1929, in Estevan, Saskatchewan. They moved to Superior, Wisconsin in 1936 so that Edward could continue to work with the Great Northern Railroad. He preceded her in death after more than 61 years in marriage. Hazel was involved in her community, talented and loved to travel. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Connie, Bill and their families in this time of great loss.
