| Notes: | (Connie Balder Mickolajak's memories of her father): "My father, Edward Balder, was born in Minot, ND May 1, 1911 to Louis Balder and Anna [nee Delaney] Balder. |
| At 16 years old he went to work as a railroad helper along side of his father Louis. He married Hazel Wendt in October of 1929. Edward and Hazel had one son in 1930 - Edward William Balder. They lived in Minot during the depression, when he took any jobs he could get. I once heard him speak of digging graves, hauling various items by truck and even riding the rails out West to try and find work. He went back on the railroad and then Ed was transfered to Enderlin, ND, where dad contined to work on the railroad and he and mom ran a boarding house as well. After awhile, he was transfered to Superior, WI. where dad worked for the Great Northern Railroad. In Superior, they had a daughter, Connie Lee, born December 31, 1945. He continued his schooling at Dunwoody Institute and became the foreman of the round house. As a kid I used to go down to the round house and look and occasionally ride in the engines. During my childhood we took numerous train trips to Minot, Seattle and other trips on the then-impressive Empire Builder. Once I watched horrified as a man drank his finger bowl. Dad retired from the Burlington Northern-they bought up the Great Northern- in the mid 1970's. For many years [16] they enjoyed the best of both worlds- They spent summers in the north with me and winters in Arizona with my brother. They had great fun dancing, traveling, visiting friends and family. Dad died June 27, 1991 in Superior and is buried in Calvary Cemetery. We all miss his twinkling eyes when he teases, his gentle ways, his sense of humor, and his love. I know that where he is now he is repairing the gate, fixing something and keeping those around him smiling. He is missed." -- March 6, 2000 |
