2011 Stimmler/Stimler and Kampa Family Reunion

2011 Stimmler/Stimler and Kampa Family Reunion

We'd like to extend an invitation to all to our 2011 family reunion to be held Friday and Saturday, July 22nd and 23rd, 2011 in Minnesota.

The Benton County Historical Society and Museum in Sauk Rapids has a person who often gives talks on the history of the county and has a presentation to give as well as a tour of the museum. The building will hold 40 and there is a restaurant across the street. The Executive Director would love to host our group and will prepare to discuss questions we send in ahead of time. There is no cost for the presentation or museum tour which we hope to schedule for Friday, July 22nd. We will try to make arrangements at a local restaurant for dinner Friday evening for those who would like to do so. Dick Kampa graciously has covered the cost of reserving half of the Wilson Park shelter on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Cloud for Saturday, July 23rd from 10 AM to 4 PM. We anticipate that we might have up to 70 people so far who are interested in attending. We still have to sign the contract but they have penciled our event in the calendar. If we are surprised with a much larger response than we have had so far we can try to reserve the entire shelter. An alternative is the city of Sauk Center which has a new park and shelter, but we can't get further details on that option until the new year.

Attendees are responsible to bring their own food and refreshments. We envision an event similar to a family picnic in the park like we did when when we were younger and every family brought their own food, sat around and talked and played games.

In the meantime we'd like to get a count on who will attend Friday and/or Saturday so we can determine if we need to reserve a larger shelter for the Saturday picnic and how many to expect for the history review. Please respond ASAP and let us know if you are interested in attending this summer's family reunion. We hope to hear from you all and look forward to seeing you there!

Cousin Andy Oman has made a fantastic breakthrough in research on the Kaufmann line! He started his big find on the Kaufmann family by contacting the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. They have all the old church records available for research there (unfortunately, the research has to be done by them and is not open to the public so it is somewhat expensive). The price was well worth it, however, as they found the marriage record for Karl Kaufmann and Magdalena Stimmler! They made a copy of the record for Andy and he has generously provided a copy of it for the family. The record shows the marriage date, parents of the bride and groom and the home town of each. That info has been known for the Stimmler family but is all new for the Kaufmann family.
Kaufmann brothers After finding the hometown in Germany (or Bavaria), Andy Kaufmann sisterstried a Google search and found a relative of the Kaufmann family still living in Germany who had done substantial research on the family and was able to give Andy some info on Karl's parents. Andy also found their obits and will be going to Carver County office in Chaska to look up their original death records sometime soon. It appears Karl had five siblings and all but one of them immigrated to America. The German connection is a descendant of the one sibling that stayed in Germany. Andy is still researching the other siblings who apparently all started in the Manayunk, Pennsylvania area and then scattered from there. He also notes that the birth year for Karl might be 1823 instead of 1821 like it says on his tombstone.
Andy sent scans of Karl's marriage and Carver County Death Certificate as well as John Stimmler's Carver county death register entry. He located photographs with all eight Kaufmann brothers and sisters and identified everyone.
As a result of Andy's outstanding research there are now new biographies for Maria A. Hartel (née Kaufmann), Johannes "John" Kaufmann, Anna Maria Kaufmann (née Maul). Joseph Kaufmann, and Emma Maria Low (née Kaufmann). Thank you, Andy, for sharing the results of your investigation. What a tremendous discovery!

Roy, George and Marie Mullally with the Roy Commander Whistle, abt. 1956-58
George Mullally has replicated a newspaper article circa 1956-1958 about Roy and Marie Mullally and their Roy Commander Whistle. Roy was a tool-and-die maker, gunsmith, and also raised and trained field trial black Labrador dogs. The Mullally boys spent many hours making the whistles.

Walter Anderson and His Golden Pheasant Hoodlums got their name from the Golden Pheasant Cafe on 6th Street in Minneapolis, an upstairs Chinese restaurant that was one of the first spots in the Twin Cities to feature local jazz. In the fall of 1927 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Walter's hot jazz band made several recordings with three record companies, Bell, Challenger and Gennett. These pre-Swing jazz records are highly sought after by collectors today. "Alabama Stomp", recorded by the band in St. Paul, Minnesota on Sept. 23, 1927, may be heard by clicking the Gennett logo at right.
