"I don't have many stories to tell, but things were pretty strict" when she was a child. Then with eyes brightened the 90 year old face displayed the remnant of a child's scampish smile as she recalled a Saturday when Tony and Mary had gone to St. Augusta for a weekend of visiting and church. The children were left in charge of the household and chores, but before the work was begun the kids got out a big kettle and made a batch of oatmeal, only to be discovered by Mrs. Joe Goenner who had taken time to stop and look in on the children. There they all were, eating oatmeal to their hearts' content -- before the chores! Those were simpler days . . .

"And there were the raids on Grandma Goenner's apple trees with the Goenner and Juenemann children."

"Did we speak German in the home? Yes, if I spoke anything else I'd have got it." They didn't mind the sermons preached in German at church. That was expected. "We didn't always have the Carlins here," with a mischievous smile.

"What a depression! We learned to do without," an often repeated phrase of our seniors who lived through hard times with faith unshaken, and perhaps strengthened, by having to "do without."

In reference to the changes that have taken place in the Church, "I always said 'religion is religion.' Times change. Changes don't change religion. Faith doesn't change . . . anyway, who can understand Latin? . . . and now we can go to Communion every Sunday."
Church of St. Marcus: Story of a Community, by Patricia K. Witte, p. 20
