Ellen's parents died when she was just 5 years old and she lived in various cities with her sisters.

At the time of the Apr. 2, 1930 federal census, Ellen was 8 years old and living with her sister Bessie and brother-in-law Drury Bonderer, their infant daughter Elizabeth (1 month old), and Ellen's sister, Jewel, on the family farm in Fairview, Livingston, Missouri. Drury was working as a farm manager in general farming.

At the time of the Apr. 23, 1940 U.S. federal census, Ellen was 18 years old and living with her elder sister and brother-in-law, Arvilla and Paul J. Kiklas, and their 5-month-old daughter Karyn at 544 Glendale Avenue, St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. Paul had been living in the same place as of Apr. 1, 1935 but his wife had been living in rural Sherburne County, Minnesota and Ellen had been living in rural Livingston County, Missouri at that time. Ellen was a high school graduate, sister Arvilla had completed one year of college, and Arvilla's husband had an 8th grade education. Paul worked 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year as a lithographer for a greeting card studio, and had an income of $2,890 in 1939. Ellen worked 48 hours a week as a waitress in a restaurant. In 1939 she worked 19 weeks and earned $225.

Ellen married Carvel R. Erickson on Oct. 13, 1945 in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. He died in an automobile accident on Oct. 23, 1957 in Spink County, South Dakota at the age of 41. Ellen was 36 years old, the mother of five children, and now a widow. The family was living at 106 7th SE, Huron, Beadle, South Dakota at that time.

In 1979 at the age of 58 she married Ralph T. Mack. He was 63 years old when he died on May 2, 1984.
