| Notes: | (Kyle Kampa's memories of Philmont Trek ‘06): "To me, Philmont was many things- it was an outdoor adventure, |
| an escape from the modern world, a chance to convene with nature; but above all, Philmont was a challenge. Philmont taught all of us how to solve problems that were faced every day and how to solve them as a cohesive unit. I remember one of the most memorable challenges we faced was when we had gone off path and were stuck in a creek bed while descending a mountain. Instead of panicking we pulled together as a team and solved the problem by finding our approximate location on the map and sending scouts out in the direction we believed the trail to be, and lo and behold it was there. Philmont also taught us the value of perseverance and dealing with circumstance, mostly through all the rain that seemed to come down at least once a day as well as a hailstorm we had to march through. Perhaps most importantly though, Philmont taught us how to get along with our fellow man. Our crew was an eclectic bunch with many different personalities, values,
and ideas on how things should be done. Instead of letting these differences split us up, we came together as a crew and worked together to get things done, and I think this is the most important lesson that I got out of Philmont. No matter who you’re with at any given time, you’ve just got to put personal differences aside to work together and accomplish something. And accomplish something we did- a ten day trek through the mountains of New Mexico is nothing to scoff at. I sincerely hope I’ll be back there one of these days- I miss the mountain air already."
