| Notes: | When Charles was a teenager in August 1838 he immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland from Germany with his |
| parents and four of his five siblings on the Ship Everhard. They settled in Cherry, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Once he
and Lena were married, he and his young family lived in Manayunk, Pennsylvania before moving
to Minnesota with his parents and father-in-law in July 1854. The family located for a brief
period at St. Paul and later moved to Carver County where
they resided on a farm in Laketown for some years. On May 11,
1858, Charles was elected as assessor during the first town
meeting to organize Laketown. In the 1860 Minnesota census
he was listed as having $1,000 in real estate and $400 in
personal estate.
Charles died in Laketown on August 3, 1881 of complications from asthma. He was 59 years old. Robert R. Mullally comments on the Kaufmann homestead: "The Kaufmann homestead in located west of Victoria of HWY #5 on the south side of Lake Auburn, now part of Minn. State Park, and near the Stimmler homestead. There are no buildings left standing." -- from a Dec. 10, 2008 e-mail |
