Notes: At the time of the Minnesota state census on Oct. 28, 1857, Maria was 4 years old and living with her parents and
  3 siblings in Township 116, Carver, Minnesota.
 
At the time of the June 11, 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Maria was seven years old and living with her parents and four siblings in Laketown, Carver, Minnesota. Her father was working as a farmer with $1,000 in real estate and $400 in personal estate. She was still living in Laketown with her family at the time of the Minnesota 1860 state census.

At the time of the June 21, 1870 U.S. federal census, Maria was 17 years old and living with her parents and six siblings in Laketown, Carver, Minnesota. Her father was working as a farmer with his real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $880. She and three of her siblings were attending school.

The Kaufmann homestead is located west of Victoria of HWY #5 on the south side of Lake Auburn, now part of Minnesota State Park, and near the Stimmler homestead. There are no buildings left standing.

Mary married John Hartel in 1879 when she was 26 and he was 35 years old.

At the time of the June 5, 1885 Minnesota state census, Mary was 30 years old and living with her husband John, their two eldest children, Emma (age 4) and Clara (age 2), and Mary (age 15), Joseph (age 10) and Annie Hartel (age 11) in St. Paul Ward 4, Ramsey, Minnesota. Husband John was born in Germany, Mary in Pennsylvania, and everyone else was born in Minnesota.

At the time of the June 20, 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Mary was 47 years old and living with her husband John and their seven children in Township 133, Cass, Minnesota. John was working as a farmer. He stated that he immigrated to the United States from Bohemia in 1867 and had lived in America for 33 years. Mary said that she was the mother of seven children, all of whom were still living. Their six eldest children were attending school. At this time Mary and John had been married for 21 years.
