parents owned their home which was valued at $3,000 and the
family had a radio.
Marie was the only child to receive a higher education. She graduated from nurses training at St. Cloud Hospital. For a number of years, she was in charge of the Nursery Ward. Marie was always ready with a helping hand. She assisted her parents in time of need and purchased and maintained the cottage on Lake Julia, making it available to all the family. She was a happy person and infected those around her with her good sense and kindness. At the time of the Apr. 12, 1940 U.S. federal census, Marie was 30 years old and lodging with the Edward and Cecilia Fiskinhoff family at 249 7th Avenue North in Saint Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota. She had been living in the same place as of Apr. 1, 1935. Marie was working as a registered nurse at the city hospital for 48 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, earning $840 in 1939. She had completed three years of college education. She and her husband John E. Parent, who was president of the Foley State Bank, bought the Maier house and lived their until John died and then a few years later Marie sold the house and moved to St. Cloud in the late 1970s. She passed away at St. Cloud Hospital, the same hospital where she worked for many years, due to complications from leukemia. |
