| Notes: | After receiving her teacher's certificate, Viola taught school in a one-room school in Gilman, MN. She met and |
| married Rupert Stimler of Foley, MN. She found
time in the raising of her nine children to join and
participate in the Rebeccas and Order of the Eastern
Star. She worked at the community hospital in Wayzata,
MN and she had a babysitting facility in her home in
Wayzata after most of her children had left home. She
was devoted to her family and took care of her invalid
son, Rupert George Jr., from his birth in 1921 until
her death in 1971. Viola was very active in churches
wherever she lived. She organized and promoted family
gatherings and potlucks. She loved and was in turn
loved by her family, which was her proud contribution
to humanity.
At the time of the April 19, 1930 census, Viola was 32 years old and living with her husband Rube and seven children in their own home valued at $1,500 ($15,000 in 2001 dollars) in Foley Village, MN. The family owned a radio. Rube was working as a mechanic in a garage. He was married when he was 21 and Viola was 23 years old. He, his parents and all his children were born in Minnesota. Viola was born in Minnesota but her father was born in Michigan and mother was born in Virginia. At the time of the Apr. 27, 1940 U.S. Federal census, Viola was 42 years old and living with her 40-year-old husband Rupert and their nine children ranging in age from 18 to 5 years in a house rented for $16/month in Buffalo, Wright, Minnesota. Rupert had completed his education through his junior year of high school, and Viola had completed three years of college. All their children were attending school with the exception of both the eldest and youngest sons, 18-year-old Rupert and five-year-old Gilbert. Junior had never attended school. In April 1935 the family had been living in a rented house in Benton County, Minnesota. Rupert was employed as an auto mechanic in a garage. He had worked 26 weeks and was unemployed for 7 weeks in 1939, earning $750 that year. (Lynda Hill reminisces on her grandmother): "I remember gladiolas in the back yard. I remember grandma had a lot of costume jewelry and it was fun to just look at it all. I remember mostly necklaces and pins. I remember when I was a young wife and my husband was in Viet Nam and I was afraid for him. She told me that she sent four sons to war and they all came home. We talked longer and agreed that they don't come back the same person that you sent away, however, and that is scary too." [From an e-mail dated April 5, 2003] Viola's Philosophy on Death: "I already have my cemetery lot picked out. It's on a hill under a shade tree. I can stay cool in summer and see you when you drive by. Don't forget to wave." |
