Peter Abfalter with his parents came to the United States in 1844, where the family settled in Clinton County, MI. In 1860 he moved to Cold Spring City, Stearns County, MN. In 1867 he came to Benton County. He married on Jan. 1, 1854. His wife, Mary King, bore him 10 children, six boys and four girls. [Source: History of the Upper Mississippi Valley, (1881)]
 
At the time of the September 10, 1850 federal census, Peter was 21 years old and working as a farmer with his brother Jacob on a farm owned by him, Jacob and their mother Mary C. Aphalter in the Township of Westphalia, Clinton County MI. Mary's share of the real estate was valued at $500, Jacob's at $200 and Peter's at $200. Also living with them was their 15 year old brother Joseph. They all were born in Prussia. The Adelman family, who would also immigrate to Benton County MN, lived three farms away.
 
At the time of the June 9, 1870 federal census, Peter was 40 years old and living with his wife Anna M. and their 8 children in St. George, Benton County, MN. Peter was working as a farmer on a farm which was assessed at $1,200. The value of his personal estate was $300. He stated he was born in Prussia as was his wife.
 
Peter Abfalter homesteaded 160 acres in Township 36 N Range 29 W Section No. 24 of Benton County, MN. His claim was recorded by the St. Cloud land office, issued on September 2, 1870. [Source: Homestead Entry Original Document No. 266; Misc. Doc. Nr. 304]
 
At the time of the 1880 census, Peter was 50 years old and living with his wife Maria and their 9 children on the family farm in St. George, Benton County, MN. Sons Jacob, John and Blasious worked with him as farm laborers. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 170D]
