At the time of the April 15, 1910 U.S. federal census, Sylvester L. was 5 years old and living with his parents and 12 siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. His father was working as a retail merchant in a hardware store.
 
At the time of the Jan. 30, 1920 U.S. federal census, Sylvester was 14 years old and living with his parents and ten siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. His father was working as a farmer in general farming. Two of his elder brothers were salesmen in a grocery store, one brother was a salesman in a hardware store and another was a farm laborer working out. Sylvester was attending school at the time.
 
At the time of the April 9, 1930 U.S. federal census, Sylvester was 24 years old and a lodger with the Ellis family (along with five other men) in Mobridge, Walworth, South Dakota. He was working as a salesman in a hardware store.
 
Sylvester married Ruth Ann Rettke in Walworth County, South Dakota on June 25, 1932. He was 27 and she was 23 years old.
 
Sylvester died Sept. 20, 1964 in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin at the age of 59.
