At the time of the Jan. 30, 1920 U.S. federal census, Ralph was 8 years old and living with his parents
and ten siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. He was attending school at the time. His father was a farmer in general farming.
At the time of the April 2, 1930 census, Ralph was 18 years old and living with his parents and brothers Jerome and Robert in the family home valued at $5,000 (approx. $50,000 in 2001 dollars) on Market St. in Clear Lake township. The family owned a radio. Ralph stated that he was born in Minnesota as were both his parents. His father John was the proprietor of a retail hardware store at which he worked as a helper. Brother Jerome was a mail carrier on a rural route. Ralph was a member of St. Marcus Church and was lector, usher and minister of communion and served on the Parish Council of the parish. He was a member of the Bishop Marty Knights of Columbus Council of Foley, Eagles Club, and of the American Legion. He was secretary and treasurer of the Rural Mail Carriers Association. Postmaster and operator of a hardware store from 1936 until 1966, Ralph was in the Army during World War II. He also was the owner of a Clear Lake funeral home from 1936 until the time of his death. |
