At the time of the June 13, 1905 Minnesota state census, Paul was 2 years old and living with his parents and seven elder siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. His father was working as a hardware man.
 
At the time of the April 15, 1910 U.S. federal census, Paul M. was 7 years old and living with his parents and 12 siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. His father was working as a retail hardware merchant.
 
During the Christmas holidays 1919, Paul Dingmann decided to quit his sophmore class of school and spend the rest of the year assisting his brother John at the Big Lake store [The Clear Lake Times, 25 Dec 1919, p. 5, col. 2].
 
At the time of the Jan. 29, 1920 U.S. Federal census, Paul M. was 16 years old and living with his brother John A. and John's wife Barbara V. in Big Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. He was working as a laborer in a store.
 
At the time of the Jan. 30, 1920 U.S. Federal census, Paul was 16 years old and living with his parents and ten siblings in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. This census entry listed Paul's occupation as "None." His father John H. was a farmer in general farming. Four of his elder brothers were working in various occupations outside the home.
