In the April 22, 1930 federal census, Joe was 14 years old and
living with his parents and six siblings in Foley, Minnesota. His
parents owned their |

home which was valued at $3,000 and the family had a radio.
Joe was a sports enthusiast. He was a star halfback on the
Foley High School football team. He was a great swimmer and delighted his family with his diving exhibitions at Lake
Julia. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Grand Marais, Minnesota from April 1934 to May 1935.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Gladys "Red" Grimm on November 10, 1938.
Joe and Red were married before WWII. Joe was drafted in
the Army and was in action in the European Theatre.
When Joe returned from the Army he returned to work at Grain Belt Brewery. They lived in the Twin Cities
area until about 1951 when they returned to the St. Cloud area and went into the hatchery business
with their brother-in-law, Jack Lynch. Red and Joe were living at 337 3rd Ave. in St. Cloud at the time. Joe then bought and ran a feed mill in Rockville, MN.
In 1964 they moved to Omaha and Joe was in the plastics business with Joe Pilmaier.
Following that they retired to Fairfield Bay, AR, where they stayed until about 1992, when they moved back to St. Cloud.
Pat Stimler talks about his father: "Joe Stimler was a Man's Man, he carried with him all his life a very high
level of integrity, a man of high morals, a man who had tremendous passion for life.
He was always there for his family and worked very hard to protect it. He
would give you the shirt off his back and would be there to say the rosary for someone who passed on.
We his family will miss him dearly, but will carry with us always, his
passion for life, and his example of what is important, which is still the
woman of his life, Gladys "Red" Stimler, God, and his family."
Joe Hall talks about his Uncle Joe: ". . . [U]ncle Joe . . .
has Anthony for a middle name after his Father. I also have the middle name of Anthony (after my grandfather and my uncle Joe).
Additionally, Uncle Joe (who was my sponsor) and I have the same confirmation name of William." -- E-mail from Joe Hall to Paul Stimmler,
January 24, 2001.
