Notes: Martha Greenwood Spaans reminisces on her father:  "Raymond Greenwood was born in Roscoe, Sterns County, MN,
in 1908, the second child of Ernest and Clara Greenwood. Ray Greenwood and Anabelle Brockman were classmates and graduated from St. John's Academy, Jamestown, ND in the class of 1926. Ray taught the following year in a Conklin Township school north of Woodworth, ND. He accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1928 but lived the life of a midshipman for only a year. In the 1932 Naval Academy year book, the Lucky Bag, Raymond J. Greenwood is listed as a "Casualty, Class of 1932". Ray returned to North Dakota where he once again combined teaching with completing his college education at North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega, a social fraternity and the Blue Key, a National Honorary Fraternity. After graduation from NDAC, Ray became principal of the Medina, ND High School where he was also on the faculty, teaching German, Mathematics and Chemistry.

"Anabelle Brockman completed her studies in Chicago, IL and returned to Jamestown. On July 16, 1934, Raymond Greenwood and Anabelle Brockman were married at St. James Catholic Church in Jamestown, ND. Gretchen was born in 1935 and Martha in 1936. After his work at Medina High School, Ray began working for the US Railway Post Office in 1939 and the family moved to St. Paul for Ray's training. Raymond James Greenwood Jr. was born in St. Paul in 1942. Back again in Jamestown, Angela Claire was born in 1946. Each of the 4 children graduated from St. John's Academy, the same school from which their parents and maternal grandmother graduated.

"In 1976 Ray retired from the Post Office Dept. after 36 years. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 995 and the Knights of Columbus and served as an officer of both organizations. He was past Exalted Ruler of the Jamestown Elks Lodge and State Secretary of the North Dakota Elks Association for many years. He was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. After retiring, Ray assumed most of the cooking responsibilities at home and he was good. During his youth Ray worked as a candy maker and learned a lot of secrets about the art. Angela gave me his old candy recipe book that is delightfully annotated with his hand-written temperature conversion chart and his corrections for altitude, if that might have been a problem in North Dakota, down in the James River Valley. Caramels and Pecan Pralines were his favorites to make and neatly wrap in waxed paper for the holidays.

"He loved hunting pheasants and ducks in the fall, trekking through fields and shelter-belts and bringing home his limit of birds. He carefully tended the flower and vegetable gardens every year. He kept his 1940 two-door black Chevrolet tuned-up and polished like new until 1955 when he traded it in on a new car. His house was always freshly painted inside and out, and the porches, garage and basement swept. He loved group singing and Gretchen played the piano in the dining room almost every evening. After supper dishes were washed and put away, the family gathered with friends and neighbors for singing. Sometimes Anabelle joined in on her violin.

"In the late 1980s cancer quickly sapped Ray's energy. He walked tall to the doctors offices, carefully considering and choosing his life options as his final days rapidly approached. He opted not to give up his quality of life for extended but dependent longevity. He lived a full life, working in the church, respected by the community and loved by his family. Ray died peacefully April 27, 1988 in Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown, ND. He was a dedicated father and husband, and an active leader in the Catholic Church and his city. He is buried in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown, ND. Ray rests in eternal peace."
