Notes: Martha Greenwood Spaans reminisces on her mother:  "Anabelle Brockman, born in Jamestown, ND was the
second daughter of David Brockman of Baden, Germany and Elizabeth Hayes, born in Madison WI. Elizabeth's parents were pioneers in Stutsman County where they settled about 1881 after the boarding house they owned burned in the Chicago Fire. David Brockman, a prominent ND business man, owned the Dakota Meat Company in Jamestown and the Brockman and Wells Real Estate Company. Anabelle graduated from St. John's Academy in Jamestown and completed her violin studies with Jacques Gordon at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and also the Chicago Art Institute. She married Raymond James Greenwood on July 16, 1934 at St. James Catholic Church in Jamestown.

"Anabelle was instrumental in establishing a Catholic Lending Library in the Knights of Columbus Hall near St. James' Catholic Church. She worked with high school girls from the Legion of Mary to purchase books, catalogue and prepare them for lending to the parishioners. The library was a busy place and the books were much in demand. It was a very successful project.

"She was active in the PTA and was the PTA historian for years. She collected articles from the local press about school related activities, updated and maintained the school news files. Annabelle played bridge many years with women friends, long time residents of Jamestown. She was a member of the Railway Mail-Clerks Auxiliary and active in one of the Catholic Altar Society Circles.

"Anabelle was very involved in the art community in Jamestown. She painted, showed and sold her oil portraits, still lifes and landscapes early in her life and concentrated on water colors, pen and ink sketches and block prints in her later years. She played in chamber-music groups in Jamestown and also had a chair for years with the Jamestown College Orchestra as a guest violinist. She promoted art and music education at St. John's Academy and Jamestown High School. One of the last contributions Anabelle made to the art community in her hometown was a leadership role in founding and supporting the Jamestown Fine Arts Association from the 1970s until the present.

"After Ray died, Angela arranged to have a wonderful live-in caretaker and housekeeper, Gertrude, a farm-widow, live with Anabelle. At the beginning, Anabelle now and then attempted to terminate Gertrude's employment. The wise and experienced caretaker didn't let Anabelle get the best of her. Undaunted, she continued to care gently for Anabelle for many years and they became good friends. In the mid 1990s, Anabelle required medical care in Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in Jamestown, ND. Anabelle died there of Pneumonia, 91 years old, on January 2, 1999 in a blizzard! She was buried next to Raymond in April at Calvary Cemetery with all her family in attendance, blessed by our cousin priest, Father Gerry McCarthy. May she rest in peace."
