At the time of the July 9, 1895 Minnesota state census Clara was 9 years old and living with her parents and nine siblings on the family farm in St. George Township, Benton Co. MN. She said she had been living there all her life, and that both her parents were of foreign birth.

Martha Greenwood Spaans reminisces on her grandmother:  "Clara Julia was born to Joseph and Theresa Kampa in St. George Township, Benton County, MN. She married Ernest Greenwood at St. Lawrence Church in Duelm, MN, Sept. 27, 1904.

"They settled in Bismarck when Ernest was appointed to the position of North Dakota State Dairy Commissioner, in 1928. Clara was very active in the Catholic Daughters of America, in St. Mary's Mission Group, the Royal Neighbors of America and was president of the United Commercial Travelers Auxiliary.

"Clara was a fine seamstress and tailor. She made clothes for her family, grandchildren and their dolls. Clara was always impeccably dressed and had a stately, regal bearing. She was also a fantastic cook. Jane Greenwood Loper remembers that she always made her own bread, rolls and 'the best doughnuts' from scratch. In our family she was famous for her German Potato Salad which she brought to family gatherings. Jane also reminded me how she and Ernest enjoyed playing cards together and with their many friends.

"During the Second World War, Clara was a Matron at the Bismarck , ND prison where German prisoners of war were held. Fluent in German, she served as an interpreter between the war prisoners and the U. S. military officers. She had special training to perform her duties as Matron.

"This last information was given to me this year, 2003, by my father's youngest cousin, Celia Greenwood Arnold, a family genealogist and friend. Celia said she learned this from Ernest, Clara's husband.

"In the 79th year of her life, Clara died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage in St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, ND, January 26, 1965. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery."
