| Notes: | Edward and Catherine settled on a homestead in St. George Township, Benton County near Duelm, MN. He spent his last years living with Ellsworth and Alvina Balder. |
| Ellsworth assumed the task of working to support his mother and younger sisters. He paid off the farm for his mother, then had to pay it off again when she sold it to him later.
At the time of the 1880 federal census, Kate was 21 years old and living with her husband Edward , daughter Lucy, age 3 and son Charles, 2 months old, on their farm in St. George, Benton county, MN. Her parents, Henry and Mary Ann Voerding, lived on the farm next door with her brother Matthew. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169B] At the time of the May 9, 1885 Minnesota state census, Katie was 25 years old and living with her husband Edward and their four children: Lucy (age 8), Charles (age 5), Barney (age 3) and Frank (1 year old). Katie's younger brother Mathias and his wife Annie lived two farms away. In the April 19, 1930 federal census, Catherine was 69 years old and living alone in her own home in Foley, Minnesota. The house was valued at $1,000 ($10,000 in 2001 dollars) and she did not have a radio. The Rupert Stimler family lived two houses away. Catherine passed away of bronchial pneumonia at 5:20 p.m. on June 3, 1943 in Leigh, Morrison county, MN at the home of her son Otto where she had been staying for the last 4-1/2 months. She was 82 years old. |

| Jim Balder talks about his grandmother Catherine: "[T]his is a picture of Katherine on her
80th birthday taken on the porch of her little house that she had in Foley in her later years. I
was at the party when this was taken. I was a very young boy and remember how fascinated
I was with the legs of the table her cake was on. My mother had a copy of this picture that I
had seen when I was very young. I don't know who has the picture now. The house where she
lived has been torn down many years ago." -- from a December 19, 2001 e-mail to Martin Holz
-- from a December 19, 2001 e-mail to Martin Holz |
