At the time of the 1880 federal census, father Edward Balder was 22 years old and living with his wife Kate, daughter Lucy, age 3 and son Charles, 2 months old, on their farm in St. George, Benton county, MN. His in-laws, Henry and Mary Ann Voerding, lived on the farm next door with their son Matthew. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169B]
 
At the time of the May 9, 1885 Minnesota state census, father Edward Balder was 27 years old and living with his wife Katie and their four children: Lucy (age 8), Charles (age 5), Barney (age 3) and Frank (1 year old). Katie's younger brother Mathias and his wife Annie lived two farms away.
 
At the time of the April 10, 1930 federal census, Lucy was 53 years old and living with her husband, John, daughter Kathryn and son Gilbert on the family farm in St. George Twp., Benton County, MN. The family owned a radio.
