| Notes: | On August 3, 1880 Theodore applied for emigration to North America. He had 270 German marks on him for |
| his journey to the United States. He embarked on
the ship "Leipzig" with a group of emigrants from Duelmen, Westfalia in Bremen
and arrived in Baltimore, MD on Sept. 10, 1880. Some other families who settled
in the same area emigrated with him. His friendship with C. A. Hunck was most
likely already established before their emigration, as both were farm hands from
Duelmen, Westfalia. It is probable that C. A. Hunck, who emigrated four years prior
with his blind uncle, encouraged his friend Theodore to settle in the Duelm, MN
region.
Theodore first landed in St. Paul and then got a job as a farm hand at St. John's University after two months in St. Paul. Two years later he went to help C. A. Hunck in his store. This is where Theodore met his future wife, Julia, who was also working for Hunck. Theodore supposedly had two brothers, Henry and August, and one sister, Gertrude, who used to correspond with him. After Theodore and Julia were married, they lived west of Duelm (across from the Henry Regnier place) then homesteaded the farm 2-1/2 miles west of Duelm (currently Emma Halfman home). Elizabeth Balder and the younger children were born on this farm. [From information provided by Joseph Pollard] At the time of the July 5, 1895 Minnesota state census, Theo was 42 years old and living with his wife Julia and their five children in St. George township. He stated that he was born in Germany and that both his parents were of foreign birth. He said he had been living in the state of Minnesota for 15 years, and had been a resident of this enumeration district for 14 of those years. He had been working as a farmer during the year ending 1895 for the last 12 months. At the time of the April 26, 1910 federal census, Theodore was 58 years old and living with his wife Julia and five children on the family farm in St. George Twp., Benton Co., MN. Both his sons, Clemens (age 25 and single) and William (age 15 and single) were working with their father as farm laborers. Theodore stated he was born in German- speaking Germany of German parents. He and Julia had been married 27 years; Julia was the mother of seven children, all of whom were still living. |
C. A. Hunck arbeitete.
