| homesteaded. Julia, who
was 4 years old when the family immigrated, didn't go to school
because of the great distance through the woods which was supposedly

After Theodore and Julia were married, they lived west of Duelm (across from the Henry Regnier place) then homesteaded the farm 2-1/2 miles west of Duelm (currently Emma Halfman home). Elizabeth Balder and the younger children were born on this farm. [From information provided by Joseph Pollard] At the time of the July 5, 1895 Minnesota state census, Julia was 30 years old and living with her husband Theo and their five children in St. George township. She stated that she was born in Germany and that both her parents were of foreign birth. She said she had been living in the state of Minnesota for 25 years, and had been a resident of this enumeration district for all 25 of those years. At the time of the April 26, 1910 federal census, Julia was 44 years old and living with her husband Theodore and five children on the family farm in St. George Twp., Benton Co., MN. Both her sons, Clemens (age 25 and single) and William (age 15 and single) were working with their father as farm laborers. Julia stated she was born in Polish-speaking Germany of Polish-German parents. She and Theodore had been married 27 years; Julia was the mother of seven children, all of whom were still living. In the April 8, 1930 census, Julia was 64 years old and living in her own home with her sons Clements, William and Henry who were farming the land. The family owned a radio. Myrtle Dziuk was their 16-year-old servant. Rev. F. J. First lived three houses away. Julia had a stroke and became paralyzed; she was an invalid for 23 years. She moved about by pushing the kitchen chairs as a crutch, and wore off several inches of legs in the process. (Mary, Dorothy and Ed remember using these chairs in the 1950's.) She died August 17, 1934; the funeral was held at St. Lawrence, Duelm and conducted by Rev. F. J. First. Juli, 1895 Volkszaehlung war Theo 42 Jahre alt und wohnte mit seiner Frau Julia (30 Jahre) und seinen fuenf Kindern in St. George Township. Er gab an, dass er in Deutschland geboren war und beide seiner Eltern dort auch geboren wurden. Er gab an, dass er 15 Jahre in Minnesota lebte und war davon 14 Jahre in dem Zaehlungsdistrikt. Er arbeitete als Bauer die letzten 12 Monate zum Ende des Jahres 1895. |
