In the 1885 Minnesota census Mary was living in Clear Lake Township with her parents and siblings.

At the time of the April 4, 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Mary was 54 years old and living with her husband Edward, their seven children and her 14-year-old niece, Mary Mertes, in their own home valued at $15,000 in Excelsior, Hennepin, Minnesota. The family owned a radio. Mary stated that she was born in Minnesota, her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Ohio. She said she was married when she was 25 and Edward was 26 years old [Source: 1930 U.S. Census, Excelsior, Hennepin, Minnesota; Roll 1088, p. 2B, E.D. 279].
