Notes:Barney Voerding cames to Stearns County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Voerding from
Wisconsin in a covered wagon in 1859. They settled on a farm in Luxemburg. At the age of 16
he took one of his father's ox teams and started freighting supplies from St. Paul to St. Cloud.
From this point he, and several other teams, hauled supplies to the northern forts of
Ambercrombie and Pembanaw. After he married Elizabeth Schulte in Newburg, WI, they
came back to Minnesota and farmed near St. Cloud.
At the time of the May 25, 1885 Minnesota state census, Barney was 29 years old and living
with his wife Elizabeth and their one-year-old daughter, Martha, on the family farm in
St. George Twp., Benton Co., MN. All three were born in the United States.
At the time of the July 12, 1895 Minnesota state census, Barney was 39 years old and living with
his wife Elizabeth and six children on the family farm in St. George Township. He said he was
born in Wisconsin and both his parents were of foreign birth. He stated he had been in
Minnesota 37 years and lived in the same enumeration district for 30 of those years. He was
working as a farmer. Nick and Mary Kampa and Joseph N. and Mary Kampa and their family
lived on a farm next door.
After farming for several years, Barney left for Montana to settle a claim
there. At the time of the February 16, 1920 U.S. Census, Barney was
62 years old and living with his son Raymond (age 15) in School District 61, McCone County, Montana. Barney worked
as a farmer and his son as a farm laborer on their home farm. His older son, Henry (age 29) lived one farm away [Source: 1920 U.S. Census, School District 61,
McCone, Montana, Roll: T625-972, Page: 3B, E.D.: 149].
The claim was justified and then the Voerdings returned to St. Cloud. Barney worked there at various jobs and
retired in East St. Cloud. He died 4:30 p.m. January 17, 1940 at his home at 218 Fifth Avenue
Northeast, St. Cloud, MN after a week's illness.
