| Notes: | Barbie Herbst talks about her great-great-great grandfather Martin: "His father died at an early age and his mother |
| remarried.
The step father didn't like Martin and made him sleep in the stable.
Martin Herbst came to America with his maternal uncle 1853 at the
age of nine years. Settled in Indiana where they farmed until 1865.
Martin went north to St. Cloud, Mn. There he was employed by the
freight company for almost five years. Because of the independence
he had found in farming, it induced him to take a homestead in
St. George Township in Benton Co. in 1869."
Martin Herbst was born Nov. 3, 1838, an illegitimate son of Katharina Speck. He immigrated to America on Feb. 15, 1853 at the age of 15 with his uncle, Michael Speck. "Martin Herbst, a native of Baden, Germany, was born on the 1st of November, 1844. At the age of nine years, he came with his uncle to America. Was engaged in farming St. Cloud. Here he was employed by the Freight Company, in drawing supplies for the frontier forts, until 1871, when he came to Glendorado Township, Benton County, and took a claim. The year following, he purchased the farm on which he now lives. Since 1875, he has been Town Clerk. Was married on the 28th of December, 1871, to Miss Caroline Balder.
