At the time of the June 1, 1900 federal census, William was 13 years old and living with his parents and his five siblings on the family farm in St. George, Benton county, Minnesota. He was attending school at the time. [Source: NA Film No. T623-757, p. 1B, E.D. 318]
 
At the time of the April 18, 1910 federal census, William was 24 years old and living with his parents and sister Alma (age 17) on the family farm in St. George, Benton county, Minnesota. At that time his father had his own income and William was working the farm in general farming. [Source: NA Film No. T624-690, p. 103A, E.D. 10, Part 2, line 9]
 
On Sept. 12, 1918, William was 32 years old and living and working at R.F.D. 1 in Foley, Benton, Minnesota. He was working for himself as a farmer. He was of medium height and build with light blue eyes and black hair.
 
During the April 5, 1930 census, William was 44 years old and living with his wife Clara and eight children on their own farm in St. George Township, MN. The family did not own a radio. He stated that he and Clara were married when he was 26 and she was 24 years old. He said he was born in Minnesota and both his parents were born in Germany.

At the time of the Apr. 2, 1940 U.S. federal census, William was 54 years old and living with his wife Clara J. and their six youngest children on their own farm worth about $1,000 in St. George Township, Benton, Minnesota. They all had been living in the same house on Apr. 1, 1935. He and son Ernest were working as farmers on the family farm.
