Notes:Brothers Frank R. and William J. Balder worked for the brewery for a time and then enlisted in the Thirteenth
Company M Minnesota Volunteers in the Spanish American War and the
Philippine Insurrection. William was 20 years old and living in St. Cloud at the time of his enlistment.
Both brothers survived the war, but their health was never good after their service.
Louis Balder, their youngest brother, sister Clara and their mother
Dorotha Balder (née Eckel) wrote letters to them in their absence.
After the war, William worked in the St. Cloud fire department with
his two brothers. Later he was manager of the telephone exchange
in Osakis and was also district manager for Northern States Power
Company.
During the January 9th and 10th, 1920 U.S. federal census, William was 40 years old
and living with his wife Dora E. (age 36), children Ethel A. (age 4-9/12 years), John W. (age 2-9/12 years), and
mother-in-law Agnes Flanagan (age 60) in Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota. All were born in Minnesota. He was married
when he was 25 and Dora was 21 years old. William was working as a manager for the telephone company [Source: ED 45, Sheet 7A, Dwelling 154,

During the April 9, 1930 U.S. federal census, William was 50 years old and
living with his wife Dora E. (age 46), children Ethel A. (age 15), John W. (age 13), M. Dorothy (age 9)
and mother-in-law Agnes Flanagan (age 69) in Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota. William owned his own home worth $3,000.

William died suddenly of a stroke Sunday afternoon, October 13, 1940 at 5:30 in a
car while on a hunting expedition.
