Notes:At the time of the 1880 federal census, Frank was 2 years old
and living with his parents and his sister, Clara (age 4), in
St. Cloud, Stearns County, MN. Also living with them were
Lina Stamonn (age 18), a servant, and Charlie Novak (age 48),
Henry Richter (age 21), John Gaffka (age 22) and Jacob McGeyor
(age 22), laborers. Frank's father was working as a brewer at the

Brothers Frank R. and William J. Balder worked for the brewery for a time and then enlisted in the Thirteenth
Company M Minnesota Volunteers in the Spanish American War and the
Philippine Insurrection. Both survived
the war, but their health was never good after their service.
Louis Balder, their youngest brother, sister Clara and their mother
Dorotha Balder (née Eckel) wrote letters to them in their absence.
After the war, Frank worked in the St. Cloud fire department with
his two brothers.
