Marge Randall (née Hamer)

reminisces on

Alma Theresa Hamer (née Stimler)

"I think everyone in the family would agree Mom had a great sense of humor and loved all the kids. All the nieces and nephews called her Oma and they all loved to see her dance.
"During the war DeeDee, Ann, Florence, and Red were all living at Grandma’s and they would have their weekly penny ante poker game. Mom would always say, "OK I have just a quarter and when that’s gone I’m going home." Of course she never did – if she ran out of money one of the girls would put in her ante.
"One time they were all over at our house wall papering the dining room. The priest stopped by Grandma’s and she sent him on over to our house – about the time he walked in the door Mom was up on the ladder and was singing one of the Latin chants from church. The priest answered her in Latin and she darn near fell off the ladder. The girls all had a good laugh – they had all seen him come in the door, but Mom had her back to the door.
"She was a hard worker, kept an immaculate house and was a great cook. She was never the disciplinarian, but sometimes she told Helen and me we were going to, "get it" and we would run in the bedroom and get under the bed and she would come with the broom to get us out and we would grab the broom and of course we would be giggling. She never pursued it very long and that was about the end of it. She usually said, "Wait until your Dad gets home" and although she told on us a lot of the time she never did tell about the broom episode and it happened more than once.
"She loved her grandkids and they all loved her and have good memories of Grams. Mom was a good bowler, loved to play bridge, crochet and always there to help whoever needed it. When she was exasperated with Helen and me her comments always began with "Ach" or "By gawd". She had a disabling stroke when she was just 68 and died eight months later. We still miss her a lot even though she has been gone 27 years."
