Joseph and Frances Schaaf and their family located for a brief
period at St. Paul and later moved to Carver County where
they resided on a farm in Laketown for some years. On May 11,
1858, Joseph was elected as one of two justices of the peace
in the first town meeting for organizing Laketown.
He was living in Chaska, Carver, Minnesota on Sept. 27, 1864 when he was inducted as a Private into Minnesota Regiment B Heavy Artillery for the Union Army in the American Civil War. In 1880 his brother-in-law, Father Valentine, founded St. Joseph's parish in Murdock, Minnesota. Joseph and Frances moved with their family from Victoria in 1879 and settled in Murdock, and Father Valentine visited the parish once a month. At the time of the 1880 federal census, Joseph was 54 years old and living with his wife Frances and their 9 children on the family farm in Dublin, Swift, Minnesota [Source: NA Film No. T9-0635, p. 256D]. At the time of the 1900 federal census, Joseph was 72 years old and living with his wife Frances C. and their 30-year-old widowed daughter Emma (working as a cigar dealer) at 582 Lafond St., St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. He was working as a wood and coal dealer. He stated that he had immigrated to the United States from France in 1844.
