At the time of the June 15, 1860 U.S. federal census, Mary Ann was
about 2 years old and living with her parents and three siblings in Laketown, Carver, Minnesota. Her father was
working as a farmer. His farm was valued at $200 and his personal property also was valued at $200.
At the time of the July 19, 1870 federal census, Maria was 11 years old and living with her parents and 6 siblings in Laketown, Carver, Minnesota. She was helping her mother with housekeeping, as were her younger sisters. At the time of the June 8, 1880 federal census, Mary was 22 years old and living with her parents and 8 siblings on the family farm in Dublin, Swift, Minnesota. She was 21 years old and living with her husband John and their 6-month- old son, Joseph, in Dublin, Swift, Minnesota. John was working as a hotel keeper at the time. She stated that she was born in Minnesota and both her parents were born in France. Brother Joseph N. and sister-in-law Annie M. Schaaf lived three households away.
