Notes:Janice Joos reminisces on her husband: Richard Dale Joos was born in Bismarck, ND. The family also
lived in Grand Forks, ND before moving to Fargo, ND when Dick was in about the 3rd grade. As a
youngster, Dick was athletic. He played football, basketball and excelled in baseball. He played
American Legion baseball for several years as a pitcher. Roger Maris, who later became a famous
player with the Yankees, was one of his teammates. Dick also loved to hunt for pheasants and ducks.
Dick graduated from Fargo High School in 1951. He received a B.S. degree from North Dakota State
University in 1955. He was in ROTC in college and was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps and
spent 6 months on active duty at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He remained in the
Army Reserves for 33 years, retiring as a Colonel.
Dick was employed in the telephone industry for 33 years, always with the same company, which started
out as Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and was US West when he retired. He worked in various
capacities: selling Yellow Pages, installing telephones, sales representative, manager in Rugby and in
Fargo, ND. He was transferred to Omaha, NE in 1970, retiring in 1990 when he was a Credit and
Collections Staff Manager.
Richard and Janice were married at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND. The phone
company transferred them often so they had lived in Fargo, Bismark and Rugby, ND before going
to Omaha where they lived for 20 years (1970-1990). They raised their four children there and were
active Church and community members.
Dick and Jan moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas in March, 1990 and enjoyed retirement, especially playing
golf and traveling. Dick passed away from a brain tumor on July 25, 1995. He is buried in the National
Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
