Kampa News at Christmas, 2001
KIDS SWARM TO TUCSON. Thankfully, our families and the grand children are well and behaving themselves. Of course, the grandsons and daughters are all doing spectacular things either preparing to become future concert pianists, gaining soccer stardom, amazing their teachers, or super achieving in Boy Scouts. Six of them attended the weeklong Camp Kampa held at our house in July for the cousins. A total of 5 of Bonnie's equally awesome nephews (and niece) visited with us. Games, contests, and target shooting kept kids busy but the backyard swimming pool was the spot of choice.

EL ESPAÑOL. Still trying to improve his use of this popular language, Dick continues involvement in a Spanish language conversation group. Topics for conversation range from current events and politics to personal matters and the talk is usually pretty interesting. While Bonnie does not attend the conversation group, both of us hope to do some language training in Mexico shortly after the first of the year.

RETIREMENT? NOT REALLY. The appeal of work over golf or tennis as a pastime is still strong for Dick. Good friend David Terman asked Dick to join in buying radio channels to help complete contracts obtained by Dave's company Highland Wireless. It was fun and fulfilling working as a broker for the eight months it took to do the job, combining business and sales experience as well as keeping current with communications technologies. Working in t-shirt and shorts from the home office has always been a dream. Dick plans on doing some other project work out of the home office next year.

CROSS COUNTRY TRAVELS. Our trips this year were to visit relatives and friends in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, and California. A visit to St. Paul included niece Marie's wedding reception and a celebration for oldest granddaughter Kate's venture into college. Lots of Arizona hiking, a Canadian fishing trip, and dove hunting have provided fun and recreation.

EXTREME PAINTING. We get great pleasure from our house and Bonnie put many hours into painting the walls in each room, embellishing them with her painted decorative designs. A highlight, the flowered rococo design she did on the ceiling of the front entrance took several days working from a scaffold to complete. Now, the only things remaining to paint are the garage walls!

DICK'S ELDER ELECTION AND BONNIE'S VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES. Just voted to the Board of Elders at St. Andrews Presbyterian, Dick sees lots of enjoyable activity ahead in association with the church leadership. Bonnie chaired the women's Fall kick-off breakfast for 300 in attendance. We've made some good friends with members through study groups at the church and involvement with new members. Participation in the church has been the source of a lot of joy for us.

BONNIE TAKES ON A NEW CHALLENGE FOR 2002. Starting in January, Bonnie will become Executive Director of the Northwest Interfaith Center - NWIC, an organization serving the elderly and needy here in Tucson. NWIC was formed through a collaboration of 18 congregations and is small in budget but large in service because of the nearly 500 volunteers involved. This will be a ministry that utilizes her many years of experience with non-profits. She's excited about the community involvement and the new challenge.

OUT OF TOWN VISITORS WELCOMED. The Kampa B&B was busy this year: Dad and Teresa, Mary and family, the Termans, Tom, Emily, Susan, the Rappels, Milli, Joyce, Sheryl & Jan, Mark and family, Ron and family, other Kampa cousins, Julie and Engle nephews, Uncle Earl and Joan, Joan and Rod, Aunt Louise and Jan. Who's next? We enjoy the chance to visit and share the desert experience.

NO SHORTAGE OF DAILY JOYS AND CHALLENGES. Like you, we have shared in the losses and sorrows over dear friends gone. And we've worried with those we know who have suffered personal setbacks. The tragedy of 9/11 touched us all. But, there was so much to be thankful for. Wishing you peace and God's blessing in the year ahead.
