| Notes: | Bonnie is originally from a branch of the Amish sect called The Brethren in Christ. They were Anabaptists also (they, like the Mennonites and Amish, did not |
| believe in infant baptism back in the 16th century and
so were persecuted and left Europe to come to the New
World). You could characterize them as hardworking,
clannish, God-fearing, agrarian, and conservative.
Although more of a modern woman with very strong
work ethic than your typical Amish sterotype, Bonnie
is a serious quilter and has made a number of them for
herself and the grandchildren.
In the more than six years since taking the helm of Interfaith Community Services, Bonnie has led the organization through tremendous growth. Under her direction, ICS has nearly tripled its budget, taken its number of collaborating member faith communities from 19 to 43, and increased its volunteer base from 250 to 600 people. Bonnie's strategic plan identified unmet needs in the community and led to the establishment of an eastside satellite office as the organization expanded from northwest Tucson to citywide. In fact, two years into that five-year plan, the organization has already achieved 95 percent of its objectives and is setting new goals. (Don Kampa's memories of Bonnie Kampa): "Five or six years after the divorce, Dick met Bonnie Engle, who is now his wife. Bonnie is also a very warm and likeable person. She has a good job setting up programs for large companies to have conventions, and is apparently very good at it. Recently, Dick was transferred to Ecuador to set up a sales office for Motorola and to recruit people. So he and Bonnie have been there for a couple of years. Bonnie got a leave of absence from her job to join him. Next they will be going on assignment to Peru. Dick is getting close to retirement, and their plan is that they will eventually be coming back here to live near me, and that pleases me no end. Dick and I get along very well and Bonnie is a wonderful person." |
