Daniel Stickney was a private in Capt. Lewis Torrence's Company of the Militia of the State of New York. They were called into service on September 2nd, 1814, being a part of the Battalion which Major Reuben Sanford commanded during what was then called The Second War with Great Britain. Daniel and the rest of his company were discharged on September 14th. At that time he had 13 days of service.

In June 1830 at the age of 27 Daniel married Sally A. Otis, a 23-year-old widow whose maiden name was Torrance. Her father was Lewis Torrence, the renowned captain of the ninth regiment of infantry of Essex county under whom Daniel had served earlier.

As of the June 1, 1840 federal census, Daniel was 37 years old and living with his wife and their five children in Jay, Essex, New York. Also living with them were one woman between the ages of 30 but less than 40, and one young man between the ages of 15 but less than 20. Daniel's in-laws resided two farms away from them.

At the time of the September 13, 1850 federal census, Daniel was 48 years old and living with his wife Sally and their nine children on the family farm in Jay, Essex County, New York. Daniel was working as a farmer at the time and stated he was born in Massachusetts [Source: 1850 Federal Census, NA Film No. M432-504, p. 212].

At the time of the 1865 New York State Census, Daniel was 64 years old, living with wife Sally (57) and their children Pierpont (25), who had served 7 months in the Union Army; Wayne (23), who had served 34 months in the Union Army; Warren (21); Jane (19); and Robert (16). The family was living in a frame house worth $150 on 94 improved acres valued at $2,000, with stock valued at $400 and impements worth $50 [1865 New York State Census: Jay, Essex, New York, FHL US/Can Film #0866321, lines 35-41].

At the time of the June 25, 1870 federal census, Daniel was 67 years old and living with his wife Sally, son Wayne and his wife Corinth, daughter Jane and one-year old Lena Stickney on the family farm in Jay, Essex, New York.

At the time of the May 1, 1875 Minnesota state census, Daniel was 72 years old and living with his wife Sally, son A. W. and his daughter Lane, son-in-law M. Cole (age 28, born in New York), his wife Jannie and their newborn son Harry in Minneapolis Ward 8, Hennepin, Minnesota.

Daniel passed away in Minneapolis on Dec. 29, 1879 at the age of 78. His 73-year-old wife Sally died exactly one week later on Jan. 5, 1880. They both are buried in the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis along with their son, Franklin J. Stickney, who died on Jan. 25, 1885.
