Franklin was 25 years old on August 26, 1864 when he was inducted into the Union Army as a Private in the F Eleventh Company of Minnesota. He was discharged on June 26, 1865 [Dalby, John. Minnesota Civil War Soldiers]. At the time of the June 7, 1880 federal census, Franklin was 42 years old and living with his wife, Louise, daughter Lena, Arthur J. Elliott, 27 years old and a bookkeeper, Clara L. Haskell, 24 years old and a dressmaker, and brother, Robert Stickney, 28 years old and a teamster in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota [Source: NA Film No. T9-0622, p. 355D]. He didn't have a job at the time. Between 1890 and 1891, Franklin was boarding at 109 E. Acker, Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota [St. Paul City Directory, 1890-1891. St. Paul, MN: R. L.
