died while working on his brother's farm in Wyoming; he was
kicked in the head by a horse.
At the time of the April 8, 1930 federal census, Viola was 36 years old and living with her husband and three children on their own farm in St. George Township which was valued at $1,200 (approx. $12,000 in 2001 dollars). The family owned a radio. At the time of the Apr. 5, 1940 U.S. Federal census, Viola M. was 46 years old and living with her 46-year-old husband Louis G. and their three children on the family farm valued at $800 in St. George Township, Benton, Minnesota. They had been living in the same house on Apr. 1, 1935. Both Viola and her husband had completed the 5th grade, as had 17-year-old son Joseph L., who, like his parents, was no longer attending school. Louis was a farmer and Joseph L. was a farm laborer on the family farm. Children Louella M. (age 15) and Ralph J. (age 13) were attending school; she was in the 7th grade and he was in the 3rd. Sally Kampa recalls her mother-in-law, Viola Kampa, as being a strong woman who handled all the finances in the family. Viola's husband Louis was a very religious man. Viola passed away at the age of 94 at the Foley Nursing Center. |
