Notes: At the time of the April 8, 1930 federal census, Michael was 5 months old and living with his parents and nine
siblings on their own farm in St. George Township which was valued at $4,000 (approx. $40,000 in 2001 currency). The family did not own a radio. His uncle Thomas and aunt Milly and their family lived on the farm next door.

At the time of the Apr. 12, 1940 U.S. federal census, Michael was 11 years old and living with his brother-in-law, Henry B. Halfmann; elder sister Emma E.; Henry and Emma's four young daughters, Arlene (8), Margy (7), Jean (3) and Mary Jane (1); sister Dolores (17); and brother Lawrence (14) on a rented farm in rural St. George, Benton, Minnesota. Henry, Emma, Arlene and Margy Halfmann were living in the same house as of Apr. 1, 1935 but Dolores, Lawrence and Michael Kampa had been living elsewhere in rural Benton County. His brother-in-law Henry was a farmer working 68 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. Brother Lawrence was an unpaid farm laborer who worked 60 hours a week for 52 weeks a year. Michael and his cousins Arlene and Margy Halfmann all were attending school, and he had completed the 4th grade at the time.

After his parents' death, Mike was raised by an older sister and then by a brother. In 1945 he moved to Houghton, South Dakota where he did farm work. On January 29, 1952 he married Darlys James at the Congregational Church of Columbia, South Dakota. They farmed in the Groton vicinity their entire married life. In 1966 Mike had open heart surgery at the University Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge.

Mike died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 16, 1972. He was 43 years old.
