At the time of the April 8, 1930 federal census, Amelia was 44 years old and living with her husband and seven children on their own farm in St. George Township. The family did not own a radio. Amelia stated both her parents were born in Germany. Brother-in-law Michael Kampa and his family lived on a farm next door.

At the time of the April 2, 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Milly M. was 54 years old and living with her husband and six youngest children on the family farm valued at $900 located in St. George Township, Benton, Minnesota. Her husband was working as a farmer on the family farm along with their sons Louis H. (age 22) and Vernon J. (age 16). She told the census taker that both she and husband Tom J. had 4th grade educations. The whole family had been living in the same house back in April 1935. Her husband worked 66 hours a week.
