| The "Saxonia," a ship in the
Hamburg-American Line, sailed with them from Hamburg
on April 20, 1870. Carl and his family are listed as passengers
520-528. It lists Carl, Maria, Carl (Charles), Robert, Edward,
August, Therese (age 18), Anna, and Caroline. According to
the passenger list, August was 4 years old and Anna was
6 months old. She was listed as an infant on the passenger
list. Joseph and Frank arrived earlier. There was a
Franz Reidner family listed that was traveling with
Carl and crew. Both families were listed as coming from
Kanitz Schlessien.
The steamer "Saxonia" arrived in the Port of New York on May 6, 1870 with Master C. Heliech in charge. The ship's manifest lists Carl Balder, age 50, male farmer; Maria Balder, age 50, his wife; C. Balder, age 23, male; R. Balder, age 7 male; E. Balder, age 6, male; A. Balder, age 4, male; and Therese Balder, age 18, female. [R. Balder to Therese Balder are indicated as being Carl and Maria Balder's children.] Next Anna Balder follows, age -6 [six months?], female baby, followed by Caroline Balder, age 16, female unmarried. All are noted as coming from Germany. Carl was a farmer. He and Maria settled in St. George Township, Benton County, near Duelm, MN about 1870. At the time of the 1880 United States census, Maria was 60 years old and living with her husband Carl and sons Robert and August Balder on the family farm in St. George, Benton county, Minnesota. Robert and August were both single and working as farm laborers for their father. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169A] Maria's death record states that her parents were John and Mary Ratter, and that she died of paralysis [stroke] on April 22, 1895 at the age of 77. Her death was registered on December 31, 1895. *Note: "[Carl and Maria] are buried in the old part of Duelm Cemetery at St. Lawrence Church. There was a fire at the church and all of the records were burned (according to the priest that I talked to there). All of the headstones were removed and one stone was placed for all of the people buried at that time. The area is on the northeast corner of the present cemetery.
