| Notes: | Louis was born in St. Cloud MN and moved out of the house at a young age, working for several tavernowners on St. Germaine Street, St. Cloud. |
| He roomed upstairs over these
establishments. When his brothers returned from the war they lived near one
another, working for taverns and finally joining the fire department of St.
Cloud, MN. The three brothers always communicated by letters and trips to
visit each other when Louis at 26 went West to Minot, ND in 1908. He and
Anna established a homestead and sent for Francis, Anna's daughter. Francis
lived in Minot for a year and during the birth of Edward Louis Balder May 1,
1911, their oldest son. Francis returned to her grandmother's home in Duelm,
MN, where she had lived most of her life. There she married Ben Albright
and raised her family.
At the time of the WWI draft registration on Sept. 12, 1918, Louis Charles Balder (as he then signed his name) was 40 years old and living with Anna and their family at 519 10th St. N.E. in Minot, Ward, North Dakota. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair, and was employed by the Great Northern Railway of Minot as an "engine watcher." Louis and Anna remained in Minot, where he worked as a machinist's helper for the Great Northern Railroad for 28 years. He passed away after suffering from heart problems for over six months. He died July 7, 1942 when he was 59 years old. He and Anna had raised five children together: Edward Louis, Luella, Dorothy, Earl "Joe" and Robert. (Connie Balder Mickolajak's memories of her grandfather): ". . . Grandpa Balder . . . died, according to grandma Balder's obituary, during the summer of 1942, before I was born. Bill, who used to spend summers in Minot when he was young, remembers that he died one summer when he was there. Bill stayed at the Wendt's, where he had a pony, and later a car to drive." |
