in the church cemetery behind the
church. She homesteaded in Minot, ND with Louis Balder where
they had Edward, Dorothy, Luella, Earl [Joe] and Robert. A
daughter, Frances, grew up with her grandmother Elizabeth,
and married Benjamin Albright of the Duelm area of Benton
County.
(Connie Balder Mickolajak's memories of her grandmother):
"Grandma was always a giving person. My mother says of her
mother-in-law, that when she and my father were first married,
she 'would come to visit with fresh vegetables from her garden.'
Grandma knitted clothes for my dolls and was always fun to
have visit. When I was in forth grade we spent six months in
Phoenix, AZ and grandma came along and lived with us. For
many years she lived across the street from her daughter, Dorothy
and her family in Minot, ND. Her house at 522 10th Street NE
is a familiar memory for all of us. It was many years away from
her birth in Manitowoc, WI May 21, 1878, life near the Twin Cities,
where her brother Edward was born, the sod house in Minden Twp,
Benton County, MN, and her homesteading in ND in 1910. She
died in Minot, ND at the age of 87 in 1965. Louis Balder had died
the summer of 1942. She is buried in St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery
in Minot. Her obituary reads '. . . she leaves six children,
16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.'"
