| Notes: | (Don Kampa's memories of Phuong): "Phuong's family were Chinese who had been living in Vietnam. Her father had been a wealthy businessman there, but when the peace |
settlement came, they escaped with just their lives and
nothing else. They had to leave everything. I believe they were sponsored by
the Baptist Church in Austin. When they came here, Phuong and her brother
each got two jobs. They were able to speak English, and they made progress
very quickly. Their folks were not able to learn English, so they couldn't find
work. The kids eventually bought them a beautiful home. They are very
comfortable, and well off.
"Dorothy and I went down for the wedding ceremony which was performed
in the Baptist church in Austin, Texas. The Chinese have a great amount of
reverence for the older generation, and we were the oldest ones there. So we
really got preferred treatment.
"They have had a very happy marriage. Ron has been a good father and
Phuong is a good mother. She still works two jobs, but now the second one is
running a home. Their two children, a boy and a girl, are named Kyle and Kelle.
For quite a few years, I took videos of all the families when we got together but I
got tired of doing that, so I bought Ron and each of the other grandchildren a
camera. I said, 'Now I want you to take pictures and send me copies.' Ron has
been very religious about it. The others are kind of hit and miss. About twice a
year I get a video from Ron. He's a great fellow."
